We don't always get to choose our moments...this was something I said to a friend at work when her tears wouldn't stop. It can be frustrating to cry publicly, leaving one feeling vulnerable and exposed - and at times, inappropriate. But sometimes, the emotion just overflows, uncontrollably. Could she have chosen Joy in that moment? Yes. Would it have been wise to push down the emotion she was experiencing? No. Unexpressed, the emotion would have embedded itself in the body, creating pain.
Living in the moment, in the Now, does not mean that every second is a feel-good moment. We are here to experience every moment fully, including the emotions. Every emotion has purpose, reminding us and moving us closer to who we are. If you didn't experience anger, you wouldn't be driven to action. If you didn't experience grief, you wouldn't know compassion. Can you fully experience Joy without having felt sadness?
Our emotions are gifts, making life more rich and complex. Before having the cookie to cover up the feeling, sit with the emotion first, feeling it all the way through. Afterward, if you still want the cookie, you definitely deserve a treat. ;)
